Support for the mission and independence of the European Commission against racism and intolerance

Written Declaration No 382

This written declaration commits only the members who have signed it

We the undersigned herby declare our full support to the mission and work of the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI).

We reaffirm the mandate of the committee to lead the Council of Europe’s efforts to counter racism and intolerance by monitoring and advising member states in this respect.

We take note of the Committee of Ministers’ recent discussions about the quality of the work of ECRI.

As we fully agree with the aim of giving the fight against racism and intolerance as much strength as possible, we urge the Committee of Ministers rather to strengthen than compromise the independence of ECRI, when taking steps to ensure the quality of ECRI’s work.

We therefore strongly recommend that ECRI are given working conditions that will further its capability to collect and analyse data from member countries.

The fight against racism and intolerance is at the core of Council of Europe activities, and we value ECRI’s contribution hence and in the future very much.
