Situation in Cyprus
Written Declaration No 375
The Assembly, in Resolution 1376, expressed profound disappointment at the failure of the efforts to end the division of Cyprus.
The Assembly paid tribute to the Turkish Cypriots who supported the Annan Plan. It called on the Council of Europe and the European Union to end the international isolation of the Turkish Cypriots.
On 26 April 2004, the European Union Council stated that it is determined to put an end to the isolation of the Turkish Cypriot community.
Despite these calls, efforts aimed at the settlement of the Cyprus problem remain frozen. Turkish Cypriot community continues to suffer under an international embargo, covering trade, transport, culture and sports.
On 24 January 2006, the Turkish Government announced a new Peace Initiative, which would lift all restrictions between two Cypriot parties, as well as lifting all restrictions at the ports and airports of Turkey and called on the United Nations to initiate negatiations to this end.
The European Union Commission reacted positively to the initiative, stating readiness to contribute to it.
We support this initiative and find the status quo unacceptable. Time has come to move towards the settlement of the Cyprus dispute.
