Threat to Human rights from the situation in Zimbabwe

Motion for a recommendation

presented by Mr CHOPE and others

      That this Assembly, having regard to the deteriorating economic and political situation in Zimbabwe, with at least one in four of the population in imminent need of food aid, 80 % unemployment and annual inflation officially estimated at 6,600 %, alongside constant pressure and threats by its government against private property and farms, opposition parties and expression of dissent, with an overall situation described by the International Crisis Group as “closer than ever to complete collapse”,

      Calls on all member states of the Council of Europe to recognise publicly the gravity of this situation, the threat to the people of Zimbabwe and their human rights and the wider dangers of regional destabilisation, and to refrain from any action which gives aid and comfort to President Mugabe’s discredited regime.
