This motion has not been discussed in the Assembly and commits only those who have signed it.

Sport activities play an important role in social cohesion and sustainable personal development as it is a powerful vehicle for the transmission of positive values and role models, particularly to young people. This role is closely linked to the respect and promotion, by all involved in the world of sport, of high ethical principles. Sport activities and the development of young people are closely interrelated areas as they ensure the healthy development of the future generations.

A pressing problem emerges as youth policies in the Council of Europe member States do not sufficiently promote the social inclusion of young people through sport activities especially at the level of universities, where they tend to focus more on the intellectual development of their students, seeing sport activities as a personal, facultative and unessential choice that needs to be done only during students’ free time.

The Parliamentary Assembly totally supports the conclusions of the 2012 Youth Assembly in what regards the young generation development by using sport activities as good practices. Therefore, the Assembly should also investigate new ways of tackling the lack of sport activities within universities (excepted the sport related ones) by promoting students’ participation to sport activities in order to maintain a healthy body and mind through the organization of national or international competitions between universities.
