MOTION FOR A RECOMMENDATION

on remembrance of the two world wars

presented by Mr BEIX and others

      The two world wars were the greatest tragedies of this century. All the horrors of those wars must remain imprinted on our memories. Yet in twenty or thirty years those who can still bear witness to these tragic events will no longer be with us. The young people of the future must keep alive the memory of these tragedies in our common history.

      The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe:

1.       hopes that such tragedies will not recur and will never be forgotten;

2.       asks the Committee of Ministers to consider the possibility of including on all identity papers issued to nationals of the Council of Europe member states a solemn declaration recalling these tragedies and urging future generations to live in peace in a spirit of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.
