MOTION FOR A RESOLUTION on non-discrimination against women in the field of sport and more particularly in the Olympic Games

presented by Mr DE DECKER, Belgium, LDR and others

This motion has not been discussed in the Assembly and commits only the members who have signed it

      The Assembly,

1.       Considering Article 6 of the Olympic Charter which stipulates that the aim of the Olympic Movement is to help build a peaceful and better world by educating youth through sport practised without any kind of discrimination and in the Olympic spirit which demands mutual understanding, friendship, solidarity and fair play;

2.       Considering that many kinds of discrimination are unfortunately used against women wishing to practise a sport;

3.       Considering that such discrimination against women is sometimes organised by governments or sports associations;

4.       Considering the creation and action of the "Atlanta +" Committee, an international committee of men and women combating discrimination against women in sport;

5.       Recalling the prominent positive role played by the International Olympic Committee in the struggle against apartheid in South Africa,

i.       opposes all discrimination against women in sport;

ii.       requests that the International Olympic Committee take all appropriate measures to condemn and outlaw any discrimination against women, starting with the next Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996;

iii.       requests in particular that no delegation which excludes women from its ranks be accepted;

iv.       invites all European governments and non-governmental sports associations to adopt all the requisite measures to abolish all discrimination against women within their ranks and during any sports events which they organise or in which they participate.
