WRITTEN DECLARATION No. 237
on the Hungarian-Slovak Basic Treaty

The undersigned, members of the Assembly,
1. Welcome the Basic Treaty that was signed between the prime ministers of Hungary and Slovakia on 19 March 1995 in Paris;
2. Believe that implementation of the Treaty will contribute in a meaningful way to the solution of national minority problems and consequently, will make a significant contribution to the stability of central Europe;
3. Especially appreciate that the efforts of the Assembly to provide stability and peace was honoured by the signatory states by incorporating its Recommendation 1201 in the Treaty. This is the first time that Recommendation 1201 has become legally binding for two member states;
4. Now call the attention of the signatory states to the importance of implementing the provisions of the Treaty, and believe that this implementation will certainly result in increasing confidence and greater long-term stability in the region and all over Europe.
