MOTION FOR A RESOLUTION

on the situation of the Kurds

presented by Mr EISMA and others

1.       In Order No. 460 on the situation of the Iraqi Kurdish population and other persecuted minorities, the Assembly decided to follow closely developments in the region.

2.       According to information provided by humanitarian organisations, Kurdish villages in Northern Iraq have been attacked by Turkish military forces, resulting in the death of at least 60 civilians.

3.       The celebrations of the Kurdish New Year in South East Turkey were followed by violent incidents which caused casualties.

4.       The Assembly deplores the violence in the region.

5.       It believes that only through a dialogue between all the parties concerned will it be possible to reach a democratic and peaceful settlement for the Kurdish people.

6.       Therefore, the Assembly invites the governments of member states to call for an international conference on the plight of the Kurdish population, under the auspices of the United Nations, with participation of the countries concerned.
