MOTION FOR AN ORDER

on the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS)

and its parliamentary assembly

presented by Mr ATKINSON and others

This motion has not been discussed in the Assembly and commits only the members who have signed it

1.       The Parliamentary Assembly welcomes the accession of Moldova. It notes that it is the first member state of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) to become a full member of the Council of Europe, and that six more CIS members have, or are expected to apply for full membership.

2.       The debate on the Moldovan accession noted similarities between the European Convention on Human Rights and the human rights convention of the CIS with regard to the protection offered to citizens of member states.

3.       The Assembly considers that it would now be appropriate to become better acquainted with the work and role of the CIS, and its parliamentary assembly and conventions, and calls upon its Committee for Relations with European Non-Member Countries to produce a report for its consideration.
