MOTION FOR A RECOMMENDATION

on the immediate improvement of public awareness

of the Council of Europe

presented by Lord NEWALL and others

1.       The Assembly, having been in existence since 1949, after producing thousands of reports on a wide variety of subjects and being aware that over 150 treaties have been signed, to a large extent as a result of these reports, notes the very widespread feeling that the general public knows little or nothing about the Council's work and regrets the fact that the Council of Europe is nearly always confused with the European Parliament.

2.       The Assembly therefore recommends that the Committee of Minister authorise

i.       the drawing up of immediate plans to broaden public awareness;

ii.       the hiring of a real professional to assist in this plan;

iii.       a thorough overhaul of the internal machinery for publicity.
