WRITTEN DECLARATION No. 230

on Kurdistan

      The undersigned, members of the Assembly,

1.       Having regard to the tragic situation in Kurdistan, notably in the Kurdish region of Turkey which has experienced an intensification of fighting and an increase in the numbers of murders of civilians, destructions of villages, violations of human rights, acts of terrorism and the taking of Western hostages;

2.       Condemning all abductions of individuals, whatever their nationality;

3.       Condemning all acts of terrorism, whatever their source, whether motivated by states or liberation movements;

4.       Expressing their solidarity for the suffering endured by the Kurdish people and their aspiration to self-determination,

5.       Undertake

      i.       to strive to obtain the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages;

      ii.       to act within the international and European communities with a view to obtaining a cease-fire between the parties involved and a political settlement of the conflict in Turkish Kurdistan;

      iii.       to exert all necessary pressure on the Turkish Government, a member country of NATO and the Council of Europe, to cease its systematic bombardments, destructions of villages, deportations and all violations of human rights.
