MOTION FOR A RESOLUTION

on East Timor

presented by Mr FRANCK and others1

The Assembly,

1.       Referring to earlier resolutions taken by the Council of Europe;

2.       Considering

      -       the continuing serious violations of human rights in East Timor,

      -       the necessity to end the Indonesian annexation of East Timor,

      -       the importance of reaching a peaceful solution to the East Timor question with participation not only of the Indonesian and Portuguese Governments but also of genuine representatives of East Timor, among them Bishop Belo, in the negotiations in the United Nations under the leadership of Boutros Boutros Ghali,

3.       Considers that new steps are needed in order to realise the self-determination of East Timor, the implementation of human rights and the peaceful solution to the status of East Timor.
