The creation of an ad hoc committee on Chechnya

MOTION FOR AN ORDER

The Assembly,

1.       Considering the extension of the conflict in Chechnya;

2.       Convinced that only a political and negociated solution can bring an end to this conflict;

3.       Instructs the Bureau to establish an ad hoc committee, composed of representatives of the Political Affairs Committee, the Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights and the Committee on Relations with European Non-Member Countries, to monitor the situation in Chechnya and to respond to Russia's request for assistance with proposals within the Council of Europe's Framework Convention for the protection of national minorities that might be acceptable to both sides; this ad hoc committee will report to the Assembly in due course;
