  Population growth and the expansion of industrial, agricultural and tourist

  The phenomenon of desertification, which is affecting the Mediterranean region
  and damaging farmland there irreversibly, is a complex and changing process
  involving a chain of natural and socio-economic causes and effects.&nbsp;
  Human beings must bear much of the blame for compounding the problem, as
  unsuitable methods of using resources are jeopardising the agricultural
  potential and food security of Mediterranean countries.</font></span></p>
  <p style="text-align: justify; line-height: 12.0pt">

  The spread of desertification is not easy to control, but awareness of the
  real nature of the problem and its social consequences will help the general
  public to understand the importance of effective efforts to combat
  desertification.&nbsp; Rational resource management policies based on greater
  use of biodiversity, biotechnology and renewable forms of energy could stem
  the current degradation of natural resources.&nbsp; Developing the available
  human resources by providing training and information and involving local
  populations, in particular women, in implementing the proposed policies should
  help to improve the food security, social stability and economic prosperity of
  the countries concerned, thus facilitating harmonious agricultural and rural
  development.&nbsp; Closer regional co-operation between Mediterranean

  desertification.</font></span></p>
