MOTION FOR A RESOLUTION on the need for intensified economic co-operation among the countries of the Balkan region

presented by MM. KIRILOV, DAVIS and others

This motion has not been discussed in the Assembly and commits only the members who have signed it

1. Most Balkan states are now either members of the Council of Europe or their parliaments have special guest status with the Parliamentary Assembly, a fact which testifies to their wish to enhance both political and economic co-operation. The time has come to transform the Balkan area, which for decades was divided by political and ideological confrontation, into a centre for expanding trade and other economic exchanges among the countries in the region.

2. The Assembly welcomes the pioneer work carried out in this domain by the Black Sea Economic Co-operation (BSEC), the Parliamentary Assembly of Black Sea Economic Co-operation (PABSEC) and the meeting of the Ministers for Foreign Affairs of the Balkan states in Sofia in July 1996, and should consider what can be done by Balkan states and the appropriate international institutions to foster economic development in the Balkans in the interest of both peace and prosperity.
