Follow-up action to the United Nations 4^th World Conference on Women (Beijing, 1995) at the European level

MOTION FOR A RESOLUTION

presented by Mr PAHOR and others

This motion has not been discussed in the Assembly and commits only the members who have signed it

            The Assembly,

            Recognising the importance of a worldwide debate on issues concerning equality between women and men;

            Welcoming the Platform for action and Declaration adopted at the 4^th World Conference on Women, which seek to safeguard women's human rights;

            Taking into account existing inequalities in many fields, and imbalances in human rights between women and men, also present in Council of Europe member states;

            Attaching great importance to proper implementation of all commitments undertaken by governments at the conference in Beijing;

            Recalling that full implementation of these commitments would considerable diminish existing imbalances in the field of equality;

            Welcoming action taken by the Committee of Ministers, with a view to examining the progress made by member states, and measures taken to follow up their commitments, in particular the establishment of an ad hoc committee of experts on the follow-up to the Beijing Conference;

            Nevertheless considering that parliamentary scrutiny should contribute considerably to this aim;

            Emphasising that the Parliamentary Assembly is an appropriate forum for a parliamentary review of European progress in this respect;

            Decides to examine the state of progress and measures taken by the member states of the Council of Europe following their commitments undertaken at the Beijing Conference on Women.
