MOTION FOR A RESOLUTION
presented by Mrs. VERMOT-MANGOLD and others
This motion has not been discussed in the Assembly and commits only the members who have signed it
1. On 23 June 1996, HADEP (Democratic People's Party) held its Congress in Ankara, Turkey. Thousands of party members and delegates took part. During the Congress, three delegates were murdered and several national representatives were imprisoned.
2. Since March this year, a number of inmates of Turkish prisons have been staging a hunger strike to protest against the denial and violation of human rights in prisons. Several prisoners have died since the beginning of the year as a result of police violence and 50 of the hunger strikers are in a critical condition.
3. The Assembly therefore demands from the Turkish authorities :
- that the killers of Mustafa Ozturk, Mehmet Kaya and Hulusi Kul, HADEP delegates, are brought immediately to justice;
- an end to the pressure being brought to bear on HADEP and the immediate release from prison of its chairman and the national representatives;
- an end to the procedures under way to break up the HADEP.
4. The Assembly also demands that the Turkish authorities cease to violate human rights in Turkish prisons.
