      MOTION FOR A RESOLUTION

      on the need for increased co-operation

      in the Mediterranean region

      presented by Mr Gonzalez Laxe

      and others

This motion has not been discussed in the Assembly and commits only the members who have signed it

1.       The Assembly would point out that co-operation between the countries of the Mediterranean region united within the Mediterranean Forum is of vital importance as a means of achieving balanced, sustainable economic development and promoting security and democratic stability in all the countries concerned.

2.       It notes with satisfaction the plan made at the Barcelona Conference to set up a free trade area in the region by the year 2010. Since only free movement of persons has been envisaged for the moment, the Assembly urges the Forum's member countries to continue their talks with a view to extending the free trade process to goods, services and capital in the longer term.

3.       Lastly, the Assembly invites participants in the Forum to bear in mind the importance of a future enlargement of the co-operation area, in particular to encompass Israel and the Palestinian national authority.
