      MOTION FOR AN ORDER

      on the political and institutional prospects

      for the European project

      presented by Mr Clerfayt, Mrs Durrieu

      and others

This motion has not been discussed in the Assembly and commits only the members who have signed it

      The Assembly,

1.       Concerned at the growing disaffection on the part of citizens with regard to the project for the unification of Europe, which it has promoted since its inception in 1949;

2.       Stressing the urgent need to deliberate on the political and institutional composition of Europe in the 21st century and on the new strategies to be adopted in order to press ahead with European integration,

3.       Instructs its Bureau

i.       to set up an ad hoc committee on the political and institutional prospects for the European project;

ii.       to give terms of reference to the ad hoc committee thus set up to canvass the views of eminent Europeans in the political, economic, social and cultural fields, in order to help it in its work and to report to the Assembly, with a view to the Summit to be held in 1999, the fiftieth anniversary year.
