Written Declaration No. 267

on the situation in Algeria

This written declaration commits only the members who have signed it

1. The undersigned members of the Assembly express their deep concern over the escalation of violence in Algeria due to the growing number of terrorist acts and killings since the beginning of the conflict in 1992.

2. Attaching great importance to continued co-operation with non-member States on the southern shores of the Mediterranean, the undersigned ask that contact be established with the Algerian authorities with the aim of putting an immediate end to hostilities.

3. The Assembly, in its capacity of guardian of democracy, the Rule of law and human rights, is invited to establish ongoing political dialogue with the Algerian Parliament and the different political movements with a view to restoring normal democratic conditions in that country and enabling the population to at last live in an atmosphere of peace and security.
