MOTION FOR A RESOLUTION

on the rise of extremist nationalism in Europe

presented by Mr FABRA and others1

1.       The Assembly notes with concern the recent rise of extremist nationalism in many European states.

2.       The phenomenon seems to be widespread encompassing not only newly independent states, but also established democracies.

3.       However, the influence on public opinion that extremist nationalistic parties and their leaders can wield does seem to be inversely proportional to the stability of democratic institutions and the political and economic situation in the country. This makes new member states and states whose assemblies hold special guest status especially vulnerable.

4.       The Assembly thus calls on the governments of member states to help foster confidence in parliamentary democracy and to firmly condemn extremist nationalism.
