MOTION FOR A RESOLUTION

on the preparations in the Council of Europe

to commemorate the 8th of May in 1995

presented by Mr LANDSBERGIS and others 1

1.       The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, looking towards the forthcoming 50th anniversary of the end of battles and the dawn of hope,

-       wants to express the will of all Europeans to be united in remembrance of our common victims and our common loss of the European civilisation, which seemed to be saved on 8 May 1945;

-       must commemorate them all, our victims and our losses, because not the victories and defeats, but only the sufferings and sympathy, are able to join the people and the nations after 50 years and, finally eliminate any feeling that some were victors and others defeated.

2.       Thus, remembering in our souls this milestone on the never-ending road of mankind towards a peaceful world of sympathy and solidarity, fighting against violence, inhumanity and hatred, in defence of the principles for which the Council of Europe was established,

-       the Parliamentary Assembly calls upon the respective bodies within the Council of Europe to consider this concept and deal with arrangements for the appropriate commemoration of this anniversary.
