WRITTEN DECLARATION No. 231

on the assassination of Mr Theophilos Georgiades 1

      The undersigned, members of the Assembly,

1.       Recalling its earlier resolutions and recommendations, in particular Recommendation 1199 (1992) on the fight against international terrorism in Europe;

2.       Recalling its Order No. 478 (1992) on the situation of human rights in Turkey, in particular that, as a political body, the Parliamentary Assembly owes its authority to the fact that it gives the highest priority to upholding human rights and parliamentary democracy;

3.       Having regard to Resolution B3/410, 436, 455, 465/94 adopted on 20 April 1994 by the European Parliament on the situation of the Kurds in Turkey and particularly paragraph e concerning the assassination of Mr Theophilos Georgiades, the chairman of the Cypriot Committee for Solidarity with the Kurdish people for many years,

4.       Are deeply shocked and very strongly condemn this assassination;

5.       Share the grief of the family and friends of Mr Theophilos Georgiades;

6.       Are convinced that the exportation of terrorism and the threat of terrorism are absolutely unacceptable and cause the death of innocent people and that they violate every conceivable aspect of human rights and international norms and constitute an act against peace and stability in Europe.
