MOTION FOR A RECOMMENDATION on the denial of human rights to Greek Cypriots living in the Karpass area of northern Cyprus

presented by Mr COX and others

1.       This Assembly deeply condemned the actions of Mr Rauf Denktash and his Turkish Cypriot administration as to the violation of human rights imposed on Greek Cypriot nationals living in the Karpass area of northern Cyprus.

2.       This Assembly further notes that no Greek Cypriot doctors are allowed to settle in this area or to visit the area on a regular basis; that no secondary schools are allowed to operate which results in young people being forced to pursue their studies outside the area in which they live and they are then never allowed to return to their families, also that the Turkish Cypriot administration vets school books before they are allowed to be delivered to Greek Cypriot schools in the Karpass area and further notes the difficulties faced by people living in this area to be able to pursue their religious beliefs.

3.       As Cyprus is a member state of the Council of Europe, the Assembly recommends that a delegation from the members of the Committee of Ministers visit this Karpass area in northern Cyprus, and that following their visit a report on conditions be published and presented to the Assembly.
