Situation in Algeria

Reply to Recommendation 1358 (1998)

from the Committee of Ministers

adopted on 19 February 1998 at the 621^st meeting of the Ministers’ Deputies

      The Committee of Ministers examined Parliamentary Assembly Recommendation 1358 on the situation in Algeria. In the light of its deliberations, on 27 January 1998 and of the replies given to Parliamentary Questions for oral answers on the same subject, the Chairman and the Secretary General issued the following declaration on 5 February 1998:

      "At the close of their deliberations on the situation in Algeria, in the light of Parliamentary Assembly Recommendation 1358, adopted on 29 January 1998, the Deputies shared the deep concern expressed and condemned the violence there, in a spirit of solidarity with the Algerian people. They welcomed, in this context, the Parliamentary Assembly’s efforts to establish dialogue with the Algerian Parliament, in addition to existing contacts with civil society.

      They also expressed full support for the on-going initiative of the European Union."
