Revitalising the collective memory and the history of the founding of the Council of Europe

Motion for a resolution

presented by Mr Gross and others

This motion has not been discussed in the Assembly and commits only the members who have signed it

1.       The Parliamentary Assembly considers that the history of the ideas and the preparatory work which led to the foundation of the Council of Europe (1941 - 1949) is worth being remembered and revitalised.

2.       In the drafting of the Council of Europe's Statute, which was signed on 5 May 1949, it was not possible to take into account all the ambitions and proposals of those who founded the Council of Europe.

3.       To stimulate the debates on the future contribution of the Council of Europe in the process of European integration it would be useful to analyse these ambitions and ideas and particularly those which are still of interest for our common democratic future.

4.       The Assembly resolves to hold a debate in the April or June 1999 part-session on this issue.
