European parliamentary sport

Motion for a resolution

presented by Mr Jakic and others

This motion has not been discussed in the Assembly and only expresses the views of the members who have signed it

1. The European Sports for All Charter and subsequent action by the Council of Europe have focused on the social and cultural aspects of sporting activity, quite apart from high-level competition sport and public spectacle.

2.       Health has long been held important for personal well being (mens sana in corpore sano) and sporting activity associated with this.

3.       Sport also embodies the principles of fair play and conflict resolution.

4.       There is good reason therefore for the involvement of parliamentarians in sports activity. It is already the case in many national parliaments. It should be encouraged and in particular in international contexts.

5.       European parliamentary sports activities are already being organised for instance for ski, tennis and golf.

6.       The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe therefore decides:

i.       to organise, together with other international parliamentary bodies, sports activities for parliamentarians on the European level;

ii.       to set up teams with a view to take part in such activities.
