Sports in Cyprus

Written Declaration No. 303

2nd edition, originally tabled on 27 June 2000

      The undersigned, members of the Assembly,

1. Considering that the various sporting associations in the Republic of Cyprus have over the years made numerous efforts to facilitate Turkish Cypriot participation in national and international sporting activities;

2. Taking into account that such efforts and offers have been rejected or ignored because the aim of the Turkish Cypriot leadership has been to achieve international recognition of Turkish Cypriot sporting bodies in order to exploit this politically;

3. Invite the Turkish Cypriot atheletes to participate in various sporting events of the Republic of Cyprus, as sport should be over and above politics;

4. Call on the Government of the Republic of Cyprus to continue its gestures of goodwill by inviting Turkish Cypriots to participate in national and international sporting activities as members of the team of the Republic of Cyprus;

5. Oppose any attempt that could undermine directly or indirectly the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus and calls upon all national sport authorities to act accordingly and to demonstrate full respect to international legality and values;

6. Condemn any attempt of political exploitation of this issue and urges all parties concerned to act in such a way so as to ensure restoration of peace conditions starting with the withdrawal of occupation troops from Cyprus.
