Rebuilding Famagusta (Cyprus)

This written declaration commits only the members who have signed it

The undersigned, members of the Assembly,

1.       Extend a warm welcome to the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Famagusta, Mr Andreas Pouyouros and Mrs Sophie Phitidis;

2.       Share their grief for the loss of their city which has lain empty and unapproachable for 26 years;

3.       Believe that the citizens of Famagusta, both Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot, can yet rebuild their city into one of the most successful economic, cultural and tourist centres of the Mediterranean;

4.       Urge all those involved in the Cyprus negotiations speedily to agree a solution which will enable Greek– and Turkish-Cypriots to return home to live in peace and work together to rebuild the prosperity of Famagusta and the other underdeveloped parts of Cyprus in full membership of the European Union.
