Doc. 8850
4 October 2000
The lamentable incident that occurred in Rotterdam,
(the Netherlands) on 2nd July 2000, during the soccer match Italy vs. France
Written Declaration No. 310
This written declaration commits only the members |
The undersigned, members of the Assembly, denounce the deplorable episode which occurred in Rotterdam (the Netherlands) during the final match of the European Soccer Championship, namely:
- that, in order to attend the game, 200 Italian disabled persons had to be carried in the arms of their assistants, with great difficulty and discomfort, due to the lack of suitable arrangements to provide access to the stadium;
- that the RAI journalists present on the spot who were filming this uncivil scene were assaulted, beaten and put under arrest for several hours by the Dutch police without justified reasons.
The undersigned therefore call on:
- the Committee of Ministers to firmly and explicitly condemn these acts of violence, that have been documented through filmed evidence and medical reports, as they are inadmissible in any country wishing to define itself as civilised;
- the Dutch Government to make an official apology for the disconcerting behaviour of the Dutch police forces and to take appropriate measures against the people who – at the end of a judicial inquiry which we hope will be conducted as soon as possible – will be found guilty of such gratuitous and unjustified violence.
