Destruction of statues in Afghanistan

Pointing out the priceless artistic value of the archaeological heritage of Afghanistan;
Emphasising the considerable damage already caused by the recent conflicts;
Convinced by countless examples, especially in the Middle East, that Islam is compatible with the preservation of the archaeological evidence of previous civilisations,
The undersigned, members of the Assembly,
Appeal to those persons who have resolved to destroy the pre-Islamic sculptures still present in Afghanistan to suspend their decision so as to allow archaeologists, under Unesco supervision, access to the sites in order to remove the threatened statues and place them in security in appropriate locations. The moving of the statues would be for a temporary period, the states where they are placed undertaking, under Unesco supervision, to restore them to Afghanistan as soon as they are requested to do so, and would afford conservation guarantees worthy of this heritage.
