Continuation of European support and solidarity for the Turkish people after the earthquake in northwestern Turkey

Motion for a resolution

presented by Mr Telek, Ms Gülek and others

This motion has not been discussed in the Assembly and commits only

the members who have signed it

      The Assembly,

1.       Recalling that this earthquake was one of the biggest natural disasters of the century covering an area of 31 000 km2, affecting eight different centres and resulting in over 14 000 deaths, with an additional few thousand missing, and 100 000 homeless families in need of help;

2.       Considering that there are many medium and long-term health related problems including the fact that:

i.       many hospitals have been damaged and are out-of-service with their medical equipment destroyed;

ii.       the clean water and sewage infrastructure of the affected areas must be repaired;

iii.       mobile hospitals must be set up;

iv.       survivors, especially children, must be protected from extreme weather conditions and diseases;

v.       protective health measures, such as vaccination, must be taken;

3.       Bearing in mind the fact that hundreds of children have been orphaned and that the resulting depression from the earthquake will have serious social and economic consequences;

4.       Undertakes to establish a fact-finding mission to the affected region and recommends member states to continue sending adequate aid to Turkey.
