Year 2000, World Mathematics Year

Motion for a recommendation

presented by Mr Varela i Serra and others

This motion has not been discussed in the Assembly and only expresses the views of the members who have signed it

1.       Mathematics and its application have played a hugely important part in world history. Its importance has increased further in current events, especially because of its relations with the economy and the new information technologies.

2.       At its 1997 General Conference, Unesco offered its support to the initiative taken by the International Mathematical Union (IMU) in declaring the year 2000 World Mathematics Year.

3.       The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, aware of the importance of mathematics and of society's need for good mathematics teaching, will join in the celebration of World Mathematics Year and offers encouragement to the various activities which have already been started during its preparation.

4.       The Assembly recommends that the Committee of Ministers turn the celebration of World Mathematics Year to advantage and analyse as thoroughly as possible the way in which mathematics is taught in our member states, especially during the compulsory phase of education.
